Each school year begins with national teachers from all three Medes schools gathering for teacher training. They are continuing to learn good teaching techniques, classroom management, general computer literacy, and even basic first aid while also refining their written and spoken English. It is an unusual experience for many teachers from Iraq to receive such training, which makes it a great opportunity for the Medes schools to invite local public school teachers to train alongside them. And this year they are inviting you to come serve in Iraq, too!

We are excited to be offering a new opportunity to serve these friends with a 1-month job opening in August. (Exact dates are flexible and TBD.) You have the opportunity to join our team and help teachers sharpen their skills while improving the quality of education across the Kurdish region. Does it sound like a project you’re willing to tackle?

What would you do?

You and your team would prepare a series of interactive training sessions on a variety of topics as determined by the school administration.  Typical topics would include all things related to spoken and written English, as well as general computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets, cloud storage, etc), classroom management, and teaching methodology. Teams work together to plan lessons and share knowledge so that even if you don’t feel like an expert you will get help from those working alongside you.

What is required?

To be considered for this position it is preferred that you possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Other degrees may be acceptable, subject to school approval. Recent college grads are welcome to apply.  If your degree is of special interest to the school, you may be able to teach special sessions related to your field.  For example, a history major might be asked to teach on the Philosophy of History.  An education major might teach on Pedagogy.

What kind of people are we looking for?

This is for up to six adventurous individuals who aren’t afraid to speak in public with minimal preparation and who want to experience life in Iraq.  Do you have a heart for education or the Middle East?  Are you looking for a way to dip your toe in the water without a long-term commitment?  This chance to serve in Iraq could be for you. Check out our podcast interview with Victoria who went in 2021!

Where will this take place?

Your days will be spent at the one of Medes School campused in Erbil, Duhok or Sulimenia.  You’ll be housed in a modern hotel or apartment with typical amenities.  A liaison from the school will help you and your team navigate life and culture during your stay. Each city has its own flavor of Kurdish culture – from the more traditional to more modern.  (Learn more about life in Iraq on our serve page and through our podcast, Between Iraq and a Hard Place!)

What does it cost?

The school would cover travel and living expenses, as well as provide a salary between $1k and $2k (depending on how many sessions are taught) while you serve in Iraq.  You would also be eligible to raise funds through Servant Group.

What would your days look like?

The typical work week is Sun-Thurs, 8:30-2:30.  You should anticipate teaching at least one 30-45 minute session per day during the 4 weeks of training.  This will leave ample time for exploring the city, drinking tea with colleagues, and breaking bread with new friends.

Would there be any training or orientation?

Yes! We’ve all done teacher training in Iraq and most of our staff have lived and taught there. We’re excited to train you, walk with you, and help you thrive in Iraq.
