An exciting and rare opportunity to teach math for 3-months with our team at School of the Medes!

One of our families is coming home to have a baby in March 2017, leaving a teaching vacancy that we need to fill. If you’ve considered helping us build a new future for young people in Iraq, but the thought of serving a full year is just too much, this may be the thing for you! Also, if by some weird chance you also love math and teenagers, – we need to talk!

Three months is a great window to get a taste of life in Iraq while making a difference in the lives of students. The groundwork is all in place for you to arrive on a Sunday and start teaching on a Monday. Your teammates and school administrators will help you every step of the way.

Where: Erbil, capital city of Iraqi Kurdistan.

When: late March – June 2017 (exact dates will be provided soon)

Duties: Teach 4 classes daily – two Geometry classes and two 8th grade Algebra 1 classes. The government asks that you have a 4-year Engineering, Science or Math degree. All lesson plans, homework, quizzes, and tests will be handed off to you by the previous teacher, and textbooks can be provided ahead of time.

The goal is to plug into the previous teacher’s structure and finish out the year with as little disruption to the students as possible. There will also be many opportunities outside of school to explore the Kurdish region and culture, as well as form lasting relationships with your neighbors, your students, and their families.

Accommodations: We have a fully-furnished house ready for you, only a short walk from the school. Also within walking distance are a variety of grocery stores, restaurants, and other shops. Transportation around town is typically via taxis, which are numerous and inexpensive.

Security: It’s Iraq, but if that really bothered you, you wouldn’t have read this far already. We’ve been placing teams in North Iraq for almost 25 years; we love the Kurds, and the Kurds love us.

Finances: The school is able to provide a nominal salary each month, but some support will need to be raised. To be more specific, you will need to raise donations or self-fund about $5000 to cover:

  • $1500 round-trip airfare from the States
  • $1500 living expenses for 3 months
  • $500 SGI fees and taxes
  • $500 travel insurance
  • $1000 emergency cash
