SGI teams have been serving in and around the Middle East for many years. We were on the ground in northern Iraq in 2003 when Saddam fell. We helped bring earthquake relief to Turkey in both 1999 and 2023. We served refugees as they landed on Lesvos via raft in 2015.
And while these dates and events are important markers in our history, we’ve seen that our most significant fruit has always come from planting team members in ordinary places with ordinary vocations, for a year or longer. It isn’t glamorous or likely to show up on the news, but time and again we’ve watched the Lord do extraordinary things through lives of steadfast service, yielded up to Him in the day-to-day. For some of our staff this might look like reading Narnia stories to 5th graders or sharing an Iftar meal with neighbors. For others it might mean hours of drinking tea with the shopkeeper or an unexpected conversation with a taxi-driver. Whatever the details, living cross-culturally opens up new opportunities for service and growth.
In fact, we like to say that every SGI team member is guaranteed to see at least one life deeply changed during his or her deployment…
