Our mission is to encourage and equip the body of Christ to love and serve our refugee neighbors in Nashville. Specifically our Women’s English Classes offer the opportunity for followers of Jesus to serve refugee women by teaching and practicing English, while also building connections and friendships.

We seek to help every student progress in their English proficiency while also knowing they are loved and valued. We use the Intercambio Confidence and Connections Curriculum alongside a host of other books and resources.

Each semester students are awarded a certificate of participation and move up to new books and new levels based on attendance and skills. We offer over 6 different levels from level 0, for those who don’t know how to read or write all the way up to level 5, an intermediate level that goes deeper into grammar, idioms, and complex topics.

Our classes are in person only and we run each semester following the Metro Nashville schools calendar.
Classes are Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:30am-12:00 and meet in South Nashville.

What does it look like to volunteer?

Most often a volunteer with no teaching experience will start out as an assistant in an English class. We work pair you with experienced teachers to learn the ropes before jumping in as a lead teacher. Volunteers commit to training and 1 class session a week (roughly 2-3 hours including prep, either Monday or Wednesday). The commitment length is usually one semester. Both in person and some online training is provided.

Our local program director will be available to help with needs that arise and walk with you through serving and caring for the women in our Women’s English classes.

What if you prefer to volunteer with kids?

We specifically need a couple of dedicated volunteers on Monday and Wednesday mornings in Nashville to run the childcare portion of our classes.

We’re looking for some women who have good ideas for activities, learning games, songs, and more! These children age from 6 months to 4 years and usually have a little English already. Their mammas are studying in Women’s English and these kiddos need a safe and engaging environment. We work on learning to say Please and Thank you, cleaning up toys, numbers and colors, coloring and puzzles, and playing nicely with others.

We also love to give away books!

We love to have a box of free resources, easy readers, and children’s books to give away to our Women’s English students. We want to encourage them and their children to read and enjoy reading. If you have books you’d like to donate towards this, let us know by emailing colleen@servantgroup.org and we’ll schedule a drop off time!

Want to help lead this program?

We are also looking for an additional team member to help run and expand this program. If you might be interested or know someone who might be, check out more information HERE.
