The Basic Sewing Class is a series of 16 lessons, each class building on the previous class to provide skills for sewing to earn income. Project topics include textiles, home decor, accessories, and sewing from a commercial pattern.
Students must finish all projects satisfactorily and pass a hands on exam at the end of the semester to be able to graduate. In the exam, students must demonstrate that they know how to do the following tasks.
– Wind a bobbin
– Thread the sewing machine properly
– Make adjustments to the machine to accomplish the tasks on the exam
Zippers – both invisible and regular center zippers
Corded Piping – make and sew in corded piping
Seams – sew a 5/8″ straight seam and sew a zigzag finish on the fabric edge
Buttons – sew a buttonhole to fit a button they are given and sew the buttons onto fabric by machine and by hand
Hems – blind hem, slip stitched hem, narrow rolled hem
