Muslim
Refugees, Nashville, TN
Nashville,
Tennessee, is home to almost 15,000 refugees and immigrants from the Middle
East, North Africa, and the Balkans, most of whom lost their homes due to war
or political persecution. The largest majority are Kurds from Northern Iraq,
but Nashville is also home to families from Iran, Southern Iraq, Somalia, Egypt,
Turkey, Bosnia, and other nations.
Refugees
arrive with few possessions, and their physical and emotional needs are
great. In response, the staff and volunteers of SGI have served hundreds
of refugee
families, both in word and deed, by helping them locate jobs, housing,
schools and healthcare.
SGI's
program
"School of Dreams & Visions" is an outreach offering English
language training and friendship to often-isolated Muslim refugee women.
Most of the students
are Iraqi Shiite housewives with young children.
SGI's
program "Refugee Hope" reaches out to
Somali Bantu and other African Muslim refugees living in Nashville.
Staff and volunteers minister through activities ranging from ELL classes
and
housing resettlement to coaching soccer teams and family counseling.
A growing
number of volunteers from local area churches are needed to help with
ongoing program needs,
particularly childcare and English teaching.
Through
these programs, it is our hope to see Christ made known
among the Muslim
communities of Tennessee.
