Northern
Iraq
SGI
teams serve among the Kurds of northern Iraq, a colorful and
historic people descended from the ancient Medes of Bible times. From the story
of Daniel
and
King Darius
to the
journey of the Magi, the Kurds have a long and rich history with the living
God.
Despite the
region's rich Judeo-Christian history, Islam swept through northern Iraq
centuries ago and remains prevalent to this day. In recent times, horrors
wrought from the hand of Saddam Hussein have oppressed the Kurdish
people.
SGI has worked
in Iraq since 1993, and our teams are engaged with activities including
outreach, discipleship, church development
initiatives, summer camps, and Christian schools enrolling hundreds of
Muslim students.
These schools,
known as the Classical
Schools of the Medes, use English-based curriculum
and carefully integrate Christian worldview and Biblical principles into
all subjects. Over 95 percent of the students come from Muslim families,
and many are the children of community leaders.
American
staff join our team on a semester-by-semester basis, and are responsible
to teach select courses. The balance of their time is spent building relationships
with students, their families, and community friends.
